The Washington Post said, “This place is craft beer heaven.” They weren’t lying, this place is a utopia of fun. Okay, I will be honest and say that I am not a huge beer drinker (not by choice, unfortunately it makes me sneeze uncontrollably), however, 3 Daughters Brewing (www.3dbrewing.com), located at 222 22nd Street South, is definitely one of my favorite places to go in Downtown St. Pete. Why? Because this place has more than creators of mouth-watering brews. It’s an exciting environment, they are a family and supporters of the community!
The owners are a husband and wife team, Mike and Leigh Harting, who have plenty of experience in restaurant management, marketing, and are awesome parents to, you guessed it, three daughters. The Hartings are a polished pair who run a fine brewery. (They also have a great story of how they met and ended up getting married, but I’ll share that in another article.)
Something extremely special about this business is that some of the folks who help run it have known each other since fourth grade where they attended school together right here in St. Pete. (They passed notes then, but now they can pass pints!) Although each member of the team plays an important part, Mike contributes a huge part of the brewery’s success to Ty Weaver, the head brewer.
“He has a palate that is about 9 times bigger than mine and he has an incredible gift for creating consumables and making things,” Mike explained.
When did they brew their first beer?
It all started when Mike texted Ty to tell him about a ridiculous article he read in a magazine about a guy who brewed a beet beer. The next day, Ty went into Bella Brava, a restaurant he was the chef at and Mike partially owned at the time, and brewed a beer as a menu ingredient to make a beer battered fish sandwich about four years ago.
That article must have sparked something brilliant in both of their minds because they quickly flew to San Diego to purchase brewing equipment and the rest is pretty much history. 3 Daughters Brewing was established in 2013 when they came into their warehouse with about six to eight beers and now they brew forty-six!
What exactly do they do at 3 Daughters?
Easily put, they make approachable beers.
For example, the Beach Blonde Ale is refreshing and bright with a satisfying hint of citrus. My personal favorite is the Rod Bender Red Ale, which has a rich malt flavor and a slight caramel sweetness.
When you visit the tasting room, you will experience a relaxed atmosphere where you can taste some of 3 Daughters beers on tap. Check out their weekly events: Monday night Trivia, Discounted Growler Fill Thursdays, and live music on Fridays and Saturdays. You will even see chemists and and assistants in the lab wearing white coats perfecting the taste of new brews.
Grab a pint and head to the warehouse with your whole family where you can see the brewhouse in action. Wait until you see the canning process, which is absolutely mesmerizing with an incredibly neat assembly line! (Did you know that they use cans for freshness, storage, and to keep UV rays out so that the beer doesn’t spoil?!) You can also choose a game to play such as foosball, chess, jumbo Jenga, table shuffleboard, checkers and giant Connect-4.
3 Daughters Brewing is friendly to Southeastern Guide Dog puppy raisers. If you are training one of these dogs, feel free to bring the puppy over, the staff will welcome you with open arms.
There is no doubt that I will be back to support 3 Daughters Brewing and pick up a growler so I can take some beer home with me! When you visit the brewery, be sure to tell them that Downtownstpete.com sent you.
