If you’ve wandered past 681 Central Avenue in downtown St. Pete recently, you may have noticed the mountain of powder pink and white balloons behind a window that reads: Secrets are dangerous things.
The secret’s out—Blond, the 600 Block’s newest neighbor, will open its doors this Friday for a Grand Opening Party from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Formally the location of Ramblin’ Rose Upcycle, Blond is now sharing the space with St. Pete mainstay, Star Booty Hair Salon. Blond will feature vintage clothing and accessories, as well as new apparel, handmade t-shirts, vinyl, cassettes and other oddities.
Blond combines the talents of local St. Petersburg dwellers, Bethany Muggleworth, Kalynd Kryza, and Katie and Alexander Charos.
While Ramblin’ Rose paid homage to more bohemian-inspired fashion, Blond draws inspiration from multiple decades and will focus on pieces that can be incorporated into a wardrobe in different ways. The four friends say they are inspired by each other, but are also combining their individual inspiration and creativity, so expect an eclectic mix of pieces.
The uniquely eclectic feel of Blond’s clothing, accessories and music extends to the shop’s décor too—the space will house seats for guests to hang while a projector screen will show music videos, old VHS tapes, films and the like. Ultimately, Blond aims to provide an analogue feel to the shop and a welcoming atmosphere for all. “We knew we wanted Blond to be a retail shop,” Katie said. “But we also wanted it to be a place where people feel like they can come in and hangout.”
While the group is focusing on curating their shop with quality goods, they have more projects on the horizon, including handmade t-shirts featuring tongue-and-cheek phrases. For now, the four are just excited to be able to create more while also getting to be a part of downtown St. Pete’s history.
“To be a part of that is really cool,” Kalynd said, “And besides, what’s better than hanging out with your friends in the process?”
